Prime Ministry Era (2003–2014)
A Decade of Growth and Reforms
Following the landslide victory of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the 2002 elections, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan took office as Prime Minister on March 14, 2003. He served as Prime Minister for three consecutive terms, presiding over a period of significant economic expansion, international diplomacy, and institutional democratization.
Economic Stabilization and Development
Upon taking office, Erdoğan inherited an economy recovering from the severe financial crisis of 2001. Working closely with international financial institutions and implementing disciplined fiscal policies, his administration stabilized the Turkish Lira, controlled inflation, and attracted record foreign direct investment. During this decade, Türkiye's GDP quadrupled, transforming the nation into a dynamic manufacturing and export powerhouse.
Social Policy and Health Insurance Reforms
Erdoğan introduced the Universal Health Insurance system, unifying fragmented public healthcare providers under a single framework, giving all citizens equal access to state and private medical facilities. Massive investments were channeled into education, including the construction of thousands of new schools and the establishment of state universities in every single Turkish province.
Infrastructure Master Plan
The Prime Ministry era marked the launch of historic mega projects. The administration constructed thousands of kilometers of divided double-lane highways, initiated the country's first high-speed rail lines connecting Ankara and Istanbul, and began work on the Marmaray undersea railway tunnel, reshaping regional connectivity.
